✂️ Slug Generator

ℹ️ What this tool does & how it works

Search-engine guidance on slugs is short and boring, which is the point: lowercase, hyphens, no keyword stuffing, and then stop changing them. The interesting work is in the conversion. NFD decomposition turns an "é" into "e" plus a combining mark, so deleting the mark range leaves a plain "e" — fold by stripping diacritics and you get "crme" instead. Symbols get spelled out before they are dropped, so "Tea & Toast" slugs as tea-and-toast rather than tea-toast, and the length cut happens on a separator boundary so a truncated slug never ends in a dangling dash. The result is checked against pure ASCII at the end: a correct slug needs no percent-encoding at all.

The one rule that matters more than the folding

Do not rename a live slug. Every change turns old links into 404s or, if you 301 them, into redirect chains that search engines follow less eagerly each hop — and a page inside a chain loses the crawl budget it used to spend on you. Hyphens beat underscores because search engines have historically treated the hyphen as a word boundary and the underscore as a glue character, so creme-brulee reads as two words and creme_brulee as one mangled one; browsers and humans also word-break hyphenated URLs at the line edge. But none of that justifies churn: a mediocre slug that has accumulated six years of links outperforms a perfect slug that had to be 301-recovered. Generate the slug once, before the URL is published, and let it stay.
