⌨️ Typing Speed Test
ℹ️ What this tool does & how it works
The scoreboard uses the conventions actual typing benchmarks defined: a word is five correct characters (the length of average English words on a typewriter counter), net WPM subtracts errors, raw WPM does not, and accuracy is correct ÷ total keystrokes. Words come from a fixed list of common English words — 60 sampled per run, shuffled in the browser, never fetched.
Where "words per minute" comes from
Counting words is ambiguous ("ox" vs "antidisestablishmentarianism"), so since the typewriter era speed has been measured in five-character words — the average length of English text as a constant. Your net score is correct keystrokes (including the spaces that complete each word) divided by five, divided by minutes; raw speed counts every keystroke you made. That single convention is what makes 60 WPM here comparable to 60 WPM anywhere else.
